Soloists for Spring 2018 concert

Charlotte Beament - Soprano cadogan-photo-small

British Soprano Charlotte Beament is a soprano on the 2017-2019 Rising Stars of the Enlightenment programme and has recently performed with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at Kings Place under the baton of Ádám Fischer. This month Charlotte made her role debut for English National Opera singing Miss Schlesen in Phillip Glass’ Satyagraha. Charlotte’s operatic roles and covers include Miss Schlesen (Satyagraha, ENO), Semele (Semele, Garsington), Berenice (Berenice, London Handel Festival), Mabel (The Pirates of Penzance, ENO), Tytania (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, ENO & GFO), Armilla (L’Agrippina, Barber Opera), Zerlina (Don Giovanni, GTO), Belinda (Dido and Aeneas, Brighton Festival), Michal (Saul, GTO), Lucia (The Rape of Lucretia, GFO), Barbarina (Le Nozze di Figaro, GFO), Serpetta (La Finta Giardiniera, GFO), Une Pastourelle (L’enfant et les Sortiléges, GFO), La Priestess (Hippolyte et Aricie, GFO), Eve (Fairy Queen, GFO), Enone and Proserpine (La Descente D’Orfée Aux Enfers, Jerwood Young Artist Scheme) and Teresa (The Yellow Sofa, GTO). Recent concert performances include Haydn's St Nicolas Mass and a New Years Wigmore Hall Concert with Arcangelo. Haydn’s Harmoniemesse, Mozart’s Vesperae Solemnes de Confessore and Mozart’s Requiem with The Gabrieli Consort. Other concert performances include Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Handel’s dixit Dominus, Villa Lobos’ Bachianas Brasilieras, Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, Strauss’ Vier Letzte Lieder and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Charlotte made her Cadogan Hall debut singing Handel’s Messiah and performed the title role of Berenice for the London Handel Festival with La Nuova Musica. Later on this month she will perform a European tour of Bach’s B Minor Mass finishing back at St John’s Smith Square.

Emma Stannard - Mezzo-Soprano Emma Stannard

Cumbrian mezzo-soprano Emma Stannard began her training at Royal Northern College of Music under Peter Wilson achieving an MMus with distinction. She then joined Royal Academy Opera (RAO), under the tuition of Yvonne Howard and Joseph Middleton. For RAO Emma performed the roles of Ruggiero, Alcina, Junon, Orfée aux enfers, Hanna, May Night and Poppea, L’incoronazione di Poppea. On leaving she was presented a Regency Award for her successes with the company. She has since performed the role of Minerva in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria for The Grange Festival, toured performances of Verdi’s Requiem and performed the role of Cherubino, Le Nozze di Figaro for The Merry Opera Company. For the Glyndebourne Festival Opera Chorus, Emma has appeared in Carmen, Poliuto, Eugene Onegin, Don Giovanni and La Traviata. Emma was awarded the ‘Audrey Strange Memorial Award’ for her performance in the final of the Royal Oversea’s Leaugue vocal competition (2016) and the ‘Amanda Von Lobb Award’ and the ‘Van Smit prize’ for her performances for RAO. In 2017 she was a finalist at the Oxford Lieder Young Artist Platform and also became a Britten-Pears Young Artist. An alumni of Georg Solti Accademia, Italy, Emma has represented the academy in a concert at the Victoria Hall, Geneva with the L’Orchestre de Chambre de Genève. She appears regularly on the concert platform travelling to China in 2017 for an Opera Gala with the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra. Closer to home, Emma has given song recitals at the Leeds Lieder Festival, St Martin-in-the Fields and the Lewes Festival of Song.

Tom Elwin - Tenor Tom Elwin

Born in London, Tenor Thomas Elwin studied at the Royal Academy of Music. An alumnus of the Solti Accademia Bel Canto and the Verbier Academy, Thomas was a member of the opera studio at Oper Stuttgart for the 2014/15 season where roles included Officer (Ariadne auf Naxos), Kuska (Khovanshchina), Adballo (Nabucco), Borsa (Rigoletto). Recent and future operatic engagements include Ferrando (Cosi Fan Tutte), Nathanael (Contes D’Hoffman), Kuska (Khovanshchina) and Borsa (Rigoletto) all for Staatstheater Stuttgart, Belmonte (Die Entufuhrung aus dem Serail) in a new production by Sigrid Herzog at the Vorarlberg Landestheater, Ferrando (Cosi Fan Tutte) for Teatro Barocco, cover and sing Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) for English National Opera and Telemaco / Il Ritorno di Ulisse in Patria for The Grange Festival. On the concert platform Thomas has performed extensively as a soloist across Europe. Recent and future appearances include Bach Passions (both arias and as Evangelist) in St. Alban’s Abbey, at the LutherKirche in Bad Canstatt and in Stuttgart and Zaragoza, Messiah with the International Bach Akademie, Stuttgart, in Manchester Cathedral, with the Odense Symfonieorkester and at the Leith Hill Festival, Britten Serenade at Kings Place, London and at the Forum, Leverkusen and performances of Messa di Gloria (Puccini), Jephtha (Handel), Nocturne (Britten), Elijah (Mendelssohn) and Creation (Haydn) , He recently performed Alfredo in The Mountebanks by Cellier in a World Premier recording with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Thomas has an extensive recital repertoire and has appeared at the Oxford Lieder Festival, Song in the City, with the Royal Academy Song circle and a solo recital as part of the Masters series at the Gresham Centre. Future plans include a debut recital recording of Bellini and Donizetti songs and a second recording featuring songs by Hahn, Duparc and Liszt. Thomas has been made an Associate Artist of Classical Opera in the 2017/18 season which includes performances of Haydn Applausus at the Cadogan Hall and La Finta Semplice in Birmingham and at the South Bank Centre.

Dingle Yandell - Bass-Baritone Dingle Yandell

British Bass-Baritone Dingle Yandell studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Brian Parsons and now studies singing independently with Jessica Cash. He is an alumni of the National Opera Studio, London and is the grateful recipient of a Sybil Tutton Opera Award administered by Help Musicians UK. Recent operatic roles have included The Doctor from Pelléas et Mélisande and Don Geronio (cover) from Il Turco in Italia for Garsington Opera. Colliné (cover) from La Boheme with Scottish Opera, the title role in Don Pasquale for Rye Arts Festival, Don Alfonso and Figaro from scenes of the Da Ponte Operas at Opera North conducted by Aleksandar Markovic. Talbot from Maria Stuarda and Collatinus from The Rape of Lucretia at Welsh National Opera directed by Elaine Kidd. Mel from scenes of The Knot Garden at Sadlers Wells directed by Graham Vick. The Jester from The Remarkable Rocket by the Waste Paper Opera company for the Tête a Tête Festival in London and Plutone in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo in Germany for Christina Pluhar and L'Arpeggiata. He has recently given a recital of operatic arias for Rhinegold Live at the Conway Hall, a recital of German Lieder with Ian Burnside and a recital of English Song with Susan Bullock. Recent solo work includes A Venetian Coronation 1595 with Gabrieli under Paul McCreesh at the Lincoln Centre in New York and a A Baroque Christmas with Holland Baroque touring the Netherlands. Future roles will be Seneca from Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea with Bach Collegium Japan in Tokyo. This summer he had his soloist debut at the BBC Proms performing Israel in Egypt under William Christie with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. For eight years Dingle toured internationally with the award-winning British ensemble Voces8. Notable performances include Tokyo Opera City and Oji Hall, Tokyo, The Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, St Petersburg, Moscow International House of Music, National Centre for Performing Arts, Beijing, National Concert Hall, Taipei, The Rheingau Festival, Germany, Köln Cathedral, The Minneapolis Basilica, The Wigmore Hall, Cité de la Musique, Paris, and Tel Aviv Opera House. He has also appeared regularly on BBC Radio, Classic FM and MPR and made many recordings for Signum Records and Decca Classics. Solo concert engagements have included Bach Christmas Oratorio and Handel Messiah at Hitomi Hall, Tokyo, and with the Orchestra of Opera North, Bach Wachet Auf and Erfreut Euch at Dijon Opera House, Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music directed by John Wilson at The Royal Festival Hall, Vaughan Williams Fantasia on Christmas Carols at Isumi Hall, Osaka, 'The Cold Song' from Purcell's King Arthur with Les Inventions, Purcell O Sing Unto the Lord with Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort, Phoebus in Purcell Dido and Aeneus with Christina Pluhar and 'Arpeggiata at The Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht. Beethoven 9th Symphony at Colston Hall in Bristol, Theodora with Basingstoke Choral Society, Dvorak Stabat Mater at Winchester Cathedral, Rossini Stabat Mater for the Rossini Society, Mendelssohn Elijah at Nantwich Civic Hall and Verdi Requiem at The Victoria Hall in Hanley.  

Vocal Techniques Workshop

Winchester Music Club hosted a vocal techniques workshop lead by Claire Williams in the Lower School Hall at The Westgate School.

The workshop consisted mainly of an introduction to breathing and breath flow using the Accent Breathing method as well as other breathing techniques. There were breathing exercises in the first half with a question and answer session and some singing exercises in the second half. Oliver Tarney, Head of Singing and Composition at Winchester College, accompanied Claire at this workshop.
