The Winchester Music Club and musicians from Winchester College together celebrated the feast day of the patron saint of music, St Cecilia, in the magnificent surroundings of Winchester Cathedral. Celebratory music by the two giants of the late Baroque contrasted with a contemplative prayer by the finest English composer of the 20th century. A quartet of exciting soloists were supported by the Music Club’s expert orchestra, under the direction of David Thomas.

Carine Tinney (soprano)

Carine Tinney was born in 1989 in Scotland. The soprano studied at the Edinburgh Napier University under Andrew Doig and Paul Keohone, where she received the Harold Gray Prize for Solo Singing. After completing her master’s degree in Lied singing under Gerhild Romberger and Manuel Lange at the Hochschule fur Musil Detmold, she completed a master’s degree in opera at the same institute. She has given concerts in the UK, Japan, Italy, Canada, Germany, China and the USA, working with many renowned conductors including Ton Koopman, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Helmuth Rilling and Jonathan Cohen. She has also played the role of Pamina in Mozart’s Zauberflaute with a production at the Landestheater Detmold and the title role of Massenet’s Cendrillon. This year Carine made her debut at the Handel Festspiele in Halle under the direction of Attilio Cremonesi and the Camerata Bern. She also premiered a modern opera “Are these waves” from Scottish composer Jane Dickson at La Monnaie in Belgium. Carine is a prize-winner at the Hugo-Wolf Academy International Competition for Liedkunst in Stuttgart and the Alumni/ASTA Competition for Lied Singing. Last year, Carine was also awarded the BECA Bach scholarship in Barcelona, giving various concerts throughout last season. Upcoming projects include Messiah in Minneapolis, USA under the direction of Jeannette Sorrell, a Lied recital in Barcelona and a production of Purcell’s The Indian Queen at the Opera de Lille conducted by Emmanuelle Haim.

Helen Charlston (mezzo soprano)

Hailed “a rather special mezzo” (Music Web International), Helen Charlston started singing as chorister and head chorister of the St Albans Abbey Girls Choir. Later a choral scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge, she held a scholarship on the Pembroke College Lieder Scheme, led by pianist Joseph Middleton. Helen is a Rising Star of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for 2017-2019, and winner of the 2018 London Handel Competition. Helen appears on the concert platform throughout Europe, Australia and America, with ensembles including the Gabrieli Consort, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Vox Luminis, Royal Northern Sinfonia, City of London Sinfonia, Seattle Symphony and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Recent performances include Mozart Requiem at the Three Choirs Festival, Schoenberg’s Lied der Waldtaube at Cadogan Hall, Elgar Sea Pictures with Cambridge University Sinfonia, performances of Handel Messiah around Australia with Stephen Layton and Mendelssohn Lobgesang at Sage Gateshead with Paul McCreesh. Helen can also be heard on Hyperion’s new release of Bach B Minor Mass (the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment/Trinity College Choir). In 2017, Helen made her Wigmore Hall debut with Florilegium as part of their Telemann 250th Anniversary Concert which was also broadcast on Radio 3. Future highlights include debuts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and London Handel Orchestra, concerts with Sir Andràs Schiff and Ádám Fischer, and a return to perform with Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Roles this season include Messaggera/Proserpina in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo for Brighton Early Music Festival and First Witch (Dido and Aeneas) for La Nuova Musica at Wigmore Hall.

James Way (tenor)

Born in Sussex, tenor James Way was the winner of 2nd Prize in the 62nd Kathleen Ferrier Awards at the Wigmore Hall. He was awarded the 2016 Simon Sandbach Award from Garsington Opera, the ‘most promising singer’ award at the Dean and Chadlington Singing Competition and is a former Britten-Pears Young Artist. James studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Susan Waters, where he is supported by the Guildhall Trust, the Drake Calleja Trust, Countess of Munster Trust, the Behrens and the Mario Lanza Foundations, and holds an Independent Opera Voice Fellowship. He previously graduated with a First Class honours degree in music from King’s College London.
In 2016 he made his Proms debut as a soloist in Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music in the Last Night of the Proms with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sakari Oramo. James was awarded the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment’s Rising Stars prize for the 2017-2018 season, and performs regularly with the orchestra as soloist in programmes including the role of Jupiter in Handel’s Semele under Christophe Roussett, Haydn The Creation under Adam Fischer and various Bach Cantatas as part of the OAE’s ‘Bach, the Universe and Everything’ series at Kings Place, London. Other future highlights include performances and recordings of Purcell’s King Arthur and The Fairy Queen with the Gabrieli Consort and Players; the European premiere of Ross Harris’ FACE with the BBC Symphony Orchestra; the title role in Handel’s Samson at Misteria Paschalia Festival with the Dunedin Consort, the title role in Acis & Galetea with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants, Mozart C Minor Mass with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Stephen Barlow, and the role of Sellem in The Rake’s Progress, conducted by Barbara Hannigan. James is also a member of the young artist programme of Les Arts Florissants, ‘Le Jardin des Voix’.
Previous concert work includes Bach St John Passion (Evangelist) at Temple Church; a performance as part of Music on the Brink of Destruction at Wigmore Hall and on BBC Radio3; Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes and Stephen Hough Other Love Songs at Wigmore Hall; Messiah with Chelmsford Cathedral Choir; Britten Canticle I (‘My Beloved Is Mine’) at the Barbican as part of the LSO Guildhall Artist Platform; Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; and Bach St Matthew Passion (aria soloist) with Sir John Eliot Gardiner at Pamplona Baluarte; Lucerne KKL Concert Hall, Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw and Bozar, Brussels. Opera credits include his debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Jakub Hrůša in the role of the Holy Fool (Boris Godunov) at the Royal Festival Hall; the Ballad Singer (Owen Wingrave) for the Aldeburgh and Edinburgh International Festivals (conducted by Mark Wigglesworth), cover the Governor (Simplicius Simplicissimus) for Independent Opera, Gondolier (Death in Venice) and cover M. Triquet (Eugene Onegin), and the role of Davy in Roxanna Panufnik’s new opera Silver Birch – both for Garsington Opera; Ferrando (Così fan tutte) for Garsington Opera’s Alvarez young artists programme and Vistola Fiume and Pastore (La liberazione di Ruggiero) for the Brighton Early Music Festival. James was selected by pianist Graham Johnson to be a member of his Song Guild for a performance of Schubert’s Winterreise at Milton Court and was also selected to study with Peter Schreier as part of the Internationale Mendelssohn-Akademie Leipzig sponsored by the UK Mendelssohn foundation.

Aidan Smith (bass)

Aidan Smith studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Academy of Music, supported by the Stokes Scholarship, and the National Opera Studio. Operatic roles include Ben Budge The Beggar’s Opera (ROH), Betto Gianni Schicchi (English Touring Opera/Opera Holland Park), Drunken Poet The Fairy Queen (ETO), Larkins La Fanciulla del West, Farmer Boggis Fantastic Mr Fox and Le Corporal La Fille du Regiment (Opera Holland Park), Superintendant Budd Albert Herring (Mid Wales Opera), Dr Grenvil La Traviata (Scottish Opera on Tour), Second Cusomer/Monk in Jonathan Harvey’s Wagner’s Dream (WNO), Colline La Boheme (Longborough Festival) and Van Bett in Zar Und Zimmerman for Opera South. He has covered Leporello for English National Opera.For Garsington Opera he has sung Antonio Le Nozze di Figaro and covered Bottom A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Marquis Mirandolina by Martinu. He has also sung Hotel Guest Death in Venice, conducted by Paul Daniel, (Aldeburgh and Bregenz Festivals). For Longborough Festival Opera and Opera Project he has performed the roles of Armed Man The Magic Flute, Black Bob The Little Sweep, Registrar in Madama Butterfly and Benoit La Boheme. He sang Jevons in the opera Ludd and Isis at the ROH Production Park in Thurock. Aidan Smith created the role of Kevin in The Office the Opera by Anne Chemlewski for the BBC, recorded The Beggar’s Opera for Chandos and appeared in Tosca for ORF (featured in the James Bond film A Quantum of Solace), Acis and Galatea and Dido and Aeneas for the BBC and Opus Arte. He has recorded a Documentary on L’europe Gallante by Campra for French Television. Concert engagements include Purcell’s Ode to St Cecilia at the Three Choirs Festival, Bach’s St Matthew Passion in St Paul’s Church Covent Garden, Handel’s Messiah in Hamburg with the Mosaique Ensemble, Haydn’s Creation at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford. He has also sung Winterreise for the Chichester International Music Festival and taken part in a concert tour of Zimbabwe. He has toured France and Spain singing with the European Baroque Academy, conducted by William Christie. Aidan Smith was a WNO Associate Artist 2014-16 supported by the Chris Ball Bursary and the Schafer Bursary. WNO roles have included Leuthold Guillame Tell, Zuniga Carmen, 2nd Armed Man The Magic Flute, Nana/Starkey in Richard Ayres’ Peter Pan (also performed at the Royal Opera House) and Lord Walton I Puritani.
